The Bangladesh Rural Development Board, with the financial assistance of ADB, implemented a project titled 'Rural Poor Cooperative Project (RPCP)' in 62 upazilas of 13 districts of Greater Rajshahi, Pabna, Kushtia and Jessore in January, 1993-December, 1996.
Subsequently RPCP includes 72 upazilas and 52 upazilas of greater Chittagong and Sylhet and 16 upazilas of greater Dhaka including total (62 + 52 + 18) = 152 upazilas. Rural Livelihood Project (Phase 1) Expenditure is successfully implemented. From July 2006 to June 2012, the project was implemented as a government-funded program.
As the project was successfully implemented, the Rural Livelihood Project (Phase II) was adopted by including a total of (152 + 36) = 190 upazilas including 36 upazilas of Dhaka, Barisal and Rangpur divisions. By organizing rural disadvantaged women and men through this project and creating employment opportunities under registered co-operative societies, the government will make a significant contribution to achieving the target of reducing the poverty rate from 31.50% to 15% by 2021.
